The Matter at High Pressure (MALTA) initiative has born to address frontier questions related to high

pressure research and technology.

Design of a novel laser heating system for diamond anvil cells

In ultrahigh-pressure research, the power of an integrated approach is far greater than the sum of individual techniques. Comprehensive understanding of high-pressure phenomena relies on the combination of complementary measurements. Following this integrated approach, apart from implementing this technique in Spain, for the first time, MALTA will combine the use of the laser-heating technique with many other experimental methods, such as x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and optical absorption measurements. Standard optical spectroscopy techniques (transmission-reflection) are perturbed by the strong VIS-IR emission of the hot spot. MALTA will also develop modulated optical probes to overcome this problem.
